He Remains Faithful

2 Timothy 2:13 “If we are faithless, he remains faithful–for he cannot deny himself.

As I read this verse this morning, my heart jumped a bit inside my chest. My eyes welled up with grateful tears. And I silently whispered a prayer of thanks to my Lord.

God is faithful. . .even when I’m not. His very nature is faithfulness. He promises to remain true to His Word. He never changes. He is always the same–yesterday, today, and forever.

Lately, I’ve been doing a lot of remembering. Remembering His faithfulness to me in my 38 years of life. He has never failed me. He has remained faithful to me when I have run from Him. When I have broken His commandments. When I have doubted His love. When I have looked to other things for fulfillment. When I have chosen to walk in my own goodness.

I have found that remembering and reflecting on God’s faithfulness is essential to my Christian walk with the Lord. As I choose to remember how the Lord has answered prayers for me, how He has provided for my needs, how He has given peace in the middle of really difficult days, how He has blessed me with friendships when I needed encouragement, and how He has been my Rock to stand on when everything seems to be shifting, my heart is stirred with love for my faithful God! I’m reminded that I can trust Him with my life! I’m challenged to keep following His way!

Just this past weekend at church, I was teaching my class the story of Joseph and God’s faithfulness to him in the midst of less than ideal circumstances. I was captivated once again by the many times the Scriptures say that “The Lord was with Joseph.” Several times in Genesis 39, we find these words. In verse 21, the Bible says, “But the LORD was with Joseph in the prison and showed him his faithful love.” (NLT). Verse 23 closes out the chapter with the words, “The LORD was with him and caused everything he did to succeed.”

God was sovereignly working for good in Joseph’s life in the midst of very trying circumstances. As Joseph faced accusations, mistreatment, and abandonment, God remained faithful to Him. Our God will always show His faithful love to us.

So often in the Old Testament, we find God’s people setting up memorials to remind their hearts of God’s faithfulness. God wanted His people to remember His faithful love for them. I believe God knew that it would be easy for our sinful hearts to forget of His love when we face the troublesome times. When life gets really hard. When we can’t see what He is doing and orchestrating in our lives. When the clouds outnumber the sunshine.

What do you need to remember today to encourage your heart? How has God shown His faithfulness to you? Can you look back into your own life and reflect on the times that He has remained faithful to you?

I sure can.

A few things come to my mind immediately.

1. A job for Jason that provided insurance coverage for my twin pregnancy plus paid paternity leave.

2. Friendships that come at just the right time to breathe His grace into my life

3. A great house in a lovely neighborhood and community of people

4. A new teaching job and opportunity to minister in my community

5. Paid medical bills for burns and a heart attack

6. A trip to Seattle to relax, refresh, and reconnect with a dear friend

7. The opportunity to snuggle with my best friend and listen to his heartbeat each night. . . and be grateful that God so clearly saved his life

8. Healing from deep burns for my oldest boy

9. Everyday conversations with my children that reveal glimpses of God’s work in their hearts

10. Deep personal healing that has come to my broken and grieving heart

The list could go on and on but you get the point. Remembering and reflecting on the faithfulness of God to me gives great hope in the dark days. Remembering reminds me that God has never left me and never will. Remembering encourages me to keep trusting, to keep walking by faith, to keep surrendering my every day to Him.

Most of all, I must choose to remember and reflect on the Gospel. The Gospel changes everything. Paul reminds Timothy in 2 Timothy 2:1, “Timothy, my dear son, be strong through the grace that God gives you in Christ Jesus.”

In Christ Jesus, God ultimately proved His faithfulness to us. When He gave His only son to die for our sins, He fulfilled His promise to redeem us. To rescue us. To offer unending grace, hope, joy, and peace. Found only in Christ Jesus. Christ in you, the hope of glory.

His Spirit that is given to us at salvation remains a constant reminder that God is forever in our hearts. We can trust Him with every part of our lives. He is always faithfully working His will in us.

“If we are faithless, he remains faithful–for he cannot deny himself.” What a promise of hope!

Our lives are forever changed by the Gospel!

May you and I never forget that we are strengthened through the amazing grace given to us by God in Christ Jesus. May we choose to remember His faithfulness and reflect on the many graces that He gives to our lives each and every day. He is constantly whispering His grace into our lives. My God is faithful!

“Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful.” ¬†Hebrews 10:23
